During World War I in Norway, a shipping magnate goes bankrupt, and the family being used to a high-spending life moves to a summer cabin with moonshine and smuggling as a way out. Love and art are sacrificed in the hunt for old honor, with the children as victims.

The White Caravan - Tetri karavani - (1963)

For generations, shepherds from villages high up in the mountains have been traveling with their vast sheep herds, moving them to distant pastures where they spend the long winter. Each of the villagers has a story to tell, intimated through flawless concision, while the film’s effortlessly fluid epic narrative is interwoven with lyrical passages, together creating a timeless cinematic poem about the primary values in life.

Deep Crimson - Profundo carmesí - (Arturo Ripstein, 1996)

Set in 1940s northern Mexico, this film re-tells the story of “The Lonely Hearts Killers”, a famous couple of murderers who made victims of lonely and wealthy widows in the USA. Coral is a rotund and passionate nurse who knows handsome gigolo Nicolas Estrella and falls for him immediately. Nicolas rejects her because she’s not rich, but Coral is determined to get him at any cost. She abandons her children and follows the man in spite of his way of living. Together they will scheme to swindle and murder women who look for love and companions writing letters to a sentimental courier.

A new Director's Cut premiered in September 2023 at the Venice Film Festival. It includes 24 minutes of previously unreleased footage. Most notably, the scene in which Coral prepares to perform an abortion is extended to show the procedure, and the scene in which she prepares to murder the a child plays out in full, with her shown putting the girl in the tub and drowning her. I am not sure that this version posted here is a Director´s Cut release.

Black Lizard - Kuro Tokage - (1968)

Japanese sixties comedy featuring a cunning female jewel thief named Black Lizard who tries to kidnap Sanaye, a wealthy jeweler’s beautiful daughter as part of a plot to steal the jeweler’s expensive “Star of Egypt” diamond. To thwart the planned kidnapping, the jeweler hires Japan’s number one detective, the brilliant Akechi. This sets off a dual between Black Lizard and Akechi as each tries to outwit the other. In the process, the two adversaries develop a mutual respect and affection for each other.

Don´t Shoot the Composer (Ken Russell, 1966) - Documentary about Georges Delerue

This documentary is far from an ordinary profile of Georges Delerue. It also serves as a calling card for Ken Russell, whose work would define the 1970s as Delerue’s did in the 1960s. It begins with a sly work of pastiche, parodying the conventions of French noir. It goes onto encompass slapstick, verité scenes of the Delerue family and a harrowing montage of the Vietnam War. This eclectic approach gives us a sense of the different facets of Delerue’s life- his love of cinema, his home life, his work ethic. It also prefigures Russell’s feature length biopics of Mahler and Liszt, though in a more modest- and lucid- fashion.

From the Clouds to the Resistance - Dalla nube alla resistenza - (1979)

With two segments. The first one arranges six stories from Cesare Pavese’s “Dialoghi con Leucò”, taken from classical mythology. The second segment is taken from Pavese’s novel “La luna e i falò”: after WWII the emigrant ‘The Bastard’ comes back to his village in the Langhe (northern Italy) to find that everyone he knew has died and the war has deeply changed relationships between people.

A Primer for '2001: A Space Odyssey' (1971)

A “primer” or explanation of the basic plot, themes, sources and meanings in Stanley Kubrick’s widely praised and often misunderstood epic motion picture, released in 1968. Film clips illustrate the scenes as interpreted in a script narrated by Keir Dullea, one of the stars of the film. Includes some behind-the-scenes information and references to material not included in the final cut. Stanley Kubrick’s controversial science-fiction film classic is analyzed for its technical and visual pioneering role in viewing human history.

Chère Louise (1972)

Louise lives alone and seems to like it that way. She has been through a divorce and the recent death of her mother. Recently, she has moved to Annecy, a moderate-sized city, to take work as a schoolteacher. She encounters a much younger man, Luigi, an Italian who is down on his luck. Though he moved to France to find work, he was robbed of his money and papers and is stranded. When he helps her bury her dogs, which her neighbour has poisoned for barking, their relationship grows to a new level.
