Elizabeth R - Mini Series - Episode 5 - The Enterprise of England (1972)

The execution of Mary Queen of Scots has outraged the Catholic factions of Europe and now the Spanish are threatening to invade England. Elizabeth still holds Cecil and Walsingham responsible but Cecil is in poor health and she needs him now more than ever because her realm is in danger. Cecil has put up with a lot from her, yet he is still willing to serve her. So is Robert Dudley who is also in poor health and though still married part of his heart is still with Elizabeth.

His stepson, Robert Devereaux is the Queen’s new favorite and he is a little jealous yet there is nothing he can do about it. Elizabeth likes young, handsome men around her but they need to be able to cope with her ever changing moods like the rest of the court does.

The Spanish invasion begins at sea while Elizabeth rides out to Tilbury to rally her land forces. Glenda recites the Queen’s famous rallying cry with both power and passion and gives the men the boost they need to fight for England. But they really won’t need to. The damage is being done to the Spanish fleet at sea. The defeat of the Armada humiliated the Spanish and Phillip II. It also sent a message that Elizabeth wouldn’t give up her crown without a fight and her people were behind her.

But the joy of her victory is short lived. She soon learns her beloved Robert Dudley is dead. She knew he was ill but wasn’t ready to face the thought of losing him. Now she is forced to and we can see the deep love she still had for him by the intense grief she displays when she is finally alone. In this moment, she is not a Queen but a woman, a woman with a broken heart that will never heal.

Elizabeth R - 1971 Mini Series - Episode 4 - Horrible Conspiracies

Mary, Queen of Scots, has been held prisoner in a British castle for 20 years, basically being spoiled while under house arrest, yet unable to leave. Behind the scenes scheming goes on with Catholic supporters of Queen Mary setting up a treachery against Queen Elizabeth. All Queen Mary seems to want is to return home or claim the throne of England through less nefarious means. Enemies of Queen Mary, desperate to rid themselves of her, step up to convince Queen Elizabeth to sign her execution, but she refuses. Their craftiness knows no bounds, and as history shows, that fate was sealed as Mary was in her castle prison.

Set nearly 30 years into her reign, Queen Elizabeth has given up on the idea of finding a husband and spawning an heir, so this episode deals mainly with political intrigue rather than the romantic pressures of the previous two episodes. Both queens are presented with noble personalities, so there's no Livia. Livilla, Messalina, Agrappinilla, Eleanor or Isabel to make a she devil out of either character.

Both women knew from birth that family loyalty in royalty is inconsequential when it comes to maintaining order for the throne. In their eyes, the other is the one doing the plotting, unaware of the set-up being plotted around them. In her second episode, Vivian Pickles is quite good, a bit more matronly and age appropriate than Vanessa Redgrave was in the same year's "Mary Queen of Scots" where Jackson also played Elizabeth. Both portrayals are worth acclaim though. The men here in charge of the plot are quite sinister, especially Dudley who tells a condemned man that death is quick but the path to it is tedious before he taunts him with torture. History has been brutal for millenniums, but the subtlety of the hint of that brutality makes it all the more vicious

Glenda Jackson as Elizabeth I - Elizabeth R (Elizabeth Regina)

Vivian Pickles as Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots.

Il Presidente del Borgorosso Football Club (1970)

In 1970 the football sports industry was nothing new, but a comedy/comical film about it definitely was. Alberto Sordi plays the part of Benito Fornaciari, a pale, religiously devout Catholic Upper Middle class Italian, who inherits from a long lost uncle a minor league football club, of all things!. He decides to visit the club so as to sell it. But the local population have other ideas, through an almost armed uprising they “force” him not to sell the club, but rather, lead it to other glories on the football field. Gradually his initial reservations about football slowly erode away to be replaced by an almost fanatical devotion to “his” football club, to the point that he abandons his family, friends and home town.

Elizabeth R - 1971 TV Mini series - Episode 3

As England reels after the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in France,  Elizabeth meets her most eligible suitor yet: François, Duke of Alençon, the younger brother of the French king. A marriage will cement France's sought-for alliance with England. Despite the Puritans' rousing opposition in the country (of which her zealously anti-Catholic councillor Sir Francis Walsingham secretly approves), Elizabeth seems taken with the witty and flower-tongued François. As her duties as queen clash with her feelings as a woman, Elizabeth faces her toughest decision.

The marriage would have cemented an alliance between England and France. However, Elizabeth eventually abandoned the proposal in 1581.

Elizabeth is charmed by François, but her advisors are cautious and anti-Catholic.

The Puritans in England are also strongly opposed to the marriage.

Elizabeth's xenophobic subjects are also discontent with the proposal.

Elizabeth may have been aware that Anjou was her last realistic chance of marriage and of having an heir.

On December 30, 1931 a 17-year-old daughter of engineer Henryk Zaremba is murdered. Rita Gorgonowa, a housekeeper, nanny of Zaremba\’s children, and his lover is accused of the murder. It was the most sensational murder of those times, followed with interest by the general public in Poland. The film is a reconstruction of the events, in particular of the trial itself. Majewski\’s picture raises the issues related to the functioning of the judiciary system, stressing the fundamental principle of law that in order to sentence an accused person indisputable evidence of guilt is required.
