The Postman Always Rings Twice (Bob Rafelson, 1981)

This remake of the 1946 film which starred Lana Turner and John Garfield is significantly better than its reputation. The script, adapted from James M. Cain's first novel, is by the award-winning playwright David Mamet, while the interesting and focused cinematography is by Sven Nykvist, who did so much exquisite work for Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. An excellent cast is led by Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange, whose cute animal magnetism is well displayed. Bob Rafelson, who has to his directorial credit the acclaimed Five Easy Pieces (1970) and The King of Marvin Gardens (1972), both also starring Jack Nicholson, captures the raw animal sex that made Cain's novel so appealing (and shocking) to a depression-era readership and brings it up to date

Direção  Bob Rafelson

Screenplay by David Mamet, based on the novel written by James M. Cain.

Stars: Jack Nicholson, Jessica Lange, John Colicos, Christopher Lloyd, Anjelica Huston.

Jack Nicholson was 43 when he made this film and Jessica Lange was 31. In James M. Cain's novel, Frank Chambers character is 32 and Cora Papadakis is 21.

David Mamet's first screenplay.

When auditions for this movie were taking place, director Bob Rafelson wrote the name of the actress he thought should be cast as Cora Papadakis and put it inside a sealed envelope. Several months later, Rafelson gave the letter to Jessica Lange, whose name was inside.

In the opening scene, Jack Nicholson's character asks for a side order of toast, as he did in the diner scene of Five Easy Pieces, which was made with the same director.

Karen Allen, Candice Bergen, Bo Derek, Morgan Fairchild, Barbara Hershey, Diane Keaton, Christine Lahti, Sondra Locke, Mary McDonnell, Helen Mirren, Jennifer O'Neill, Susan Sarandon, Cybill Shepherd, and Sissy Spacek were all offered the part of Cora, but they all turned it down.
Interesting?
