Glenda Jackson, the British Actress, dies at 87

Glenda Jackson, the double Oscar-winning British actress, and former Labour MP, has died. She was 87.

In a statement, her agent Lionel Larner said she died at her home in Blackheath, south-east London,
following a “brief illness.”

Larner’s statement read: “Glenda Jackson, two-time Academy Award-winning actress, and politician, died peacefully at her home in Blackheath, London this morning after a brief illness with her family at her side.”

Statement continued: “She recently completed filming The Great Escaper in which she co-starred with Michael Caine.”

Jackson was perhaps best known for her two Oscar winning performances in Ken Russell’s 1970’s pic Women in Love, a D. H. Lawrence adaptation, where she starred alongside Alan Bates and Oliver Reed and 1973’s A Touch of Class. Jackson also won a BAFTA Best Actress gong for Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971).

Jackson was born in 1936 in North West England. She studied at London’s prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and made her Broadway debut in a 1966 production of Marat/Sade. Across her stage career, she received five Laurence Olivier Award nominations for performances in classical productions such as Antony and Cleopatra (1979). She won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her role in the revival of Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women in 2018.

In the early 90s, Jackson left acting to take up a career in British politics. She entered the House of Commons after she was elected as the Labour Party MP for Hampstead and Highgate in the 1992 general election. The constituency was later re-named Hampstead and Kilburn. She served as a Junior Transport Minister from 1997 to 1999 in Tony Blair’s New Labour government. Jackson stood down at the 2015 general election and returned to acting.

Prick Up Your Ears (Stephen Frears, 1987)

This movie is the story of the spectacular life and violent death of British playwright Joe Orton (Gary Oldman). In his teens, Orton is befriended by the older, more reserved Kenneth Halliwell (Alfred Molina), and while the two begin a relationship, it's fairly obvious that it's not all about sex. Orton loves the dangers of bath-houses and liaisons in public restrooms; Halliwell, not as charming or attractive as Orton, doesn't fare so well in those environments. While both long to become writers, it is Orton who achieves fame. His plays "Entertaining Mr. Sloane" and "Loot" become huge hits in London of the sixties, and he's even commissioned to write a screenplay for the Beatles. But Orton's success takes him farther from Halliwell, whose response ended both his life and the life of the up-and-coming playwright.

Treat Williams Dies In Motorcycle Accident: ‘Everwood’ Star Was 71

UPDATED with family statement: Treat Williams, the actor best known for playing Dr. Andy Brown on the Greg Berlanti-produced Everwood, has died, Deadline has confirmed. The actor was killed in a motorcycle accident in Dorset, Vermont. He was 71.

His family issued the following statement to Deadline:

A Statement on the Passing of Treat Williams:

It is with great sadness that we report that our beloved Treat Williams has passed away tonight in Dorset, Vermont after a fatal motorcycle accident. As you can imagine, we are shocked and greatly bereaved at this time. Treat was full of love for his family, for his life and for his craft, and was truly at the top of his game in all of it. It is all so shocking right now, but please know that Treat was dearly and deeply loved and respected by his family and everyone who knew him. We are beyond devastated and ask that you respect our privacy as we deal with our grief. To all his fans, please know that Treat appreciated all of you and please continue to keep him in your hearts and prayers.

Williams played the kindhearted lead on Everwood for four years, a role that seemed to fit the actor perfectly. Williams received two SAG Award nominations for his work on the show. The series was never a ratings blockbuster, but it helped launch the careers of Chris Pratt, Emily VanCamp and Gregory Smith. Williams was well-seasoned by the time the show came around.

He made his film debut in the 1975 thriller film Deadly Hero. The following year he played a supporting role in The Ritz and also appeared in John Sturges’ The Eagle Has Landed. His breakthrough came in 1979, when he starred as George Berger in  Miloš Forman’s Hair, based on the 1967 Broadway musical. Williams was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for the film.

His other big-screen work includes Steven Spielberg’s 1941 (1979), Sidney Lumet’s Prince of the City (1981), Sergio Leone’s Once Upon A Time In America (1984), Dead Heat (1988), Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead (1995) and Deep Rising (1998).

On TV, Williams’ career stretched back 40 years to a starring role in the 1983 TV movie Dempsey about the former heavyweight champ to whom the actor bore more than a passing resemblance.

Most-recently appeared in a six-episode arc on Blue Bloods as Lenny Ross. Before that, he appeared in the Hallmark Channel’s Chesapeake Shores from 2016-2022.

The Painted Veil (2006)

A  love story which has Kitty (Naomi Watts) meeting young, intelligent, shy and somewhat dull Dr.Walter Fane (Edward Norton), whose forte is the study of infectious diseases, and the convenient marriage to which she finds herself committed. It is in this web of intrigue that they head for China, only after Walter discovers Kitty's infidelity with the dashing and witty diplomat Charlie Townsend (Liev Schreiber). So much as to hide her from herself and to help thwart a cholera outbreak, this is a marriage more than on the rocks. This is a cold, indifferent, and loveless partnership in a vast unknown and deadly environment that will test both of these flightless lovebirds and with the hardships and tolerances more than any had ever anticipated. A visual delight amidst the pain and suffering of dying people and failing marriage.

‘Being Mary Tyler Moore’: How The Doc Came To Be & The Woman Behind The Smile — HBO Max

My YouTube channel (REVISTA CINE TV) is showing the best episodes of Mary Tyler Moore Show. I posted the first best rated 5 episodes and more to come.

The HBO Original documentary Being Mary Tyler Moore reveals the life of the titular actress, producer and philanthropist who dazzled family, friends and fans both on and off screen until her death in 2017.

Directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker James Adolphus and produced by Lena Waithe, Debra Martin Chase and Ben Selkow, Being Mary Tyler Moore is filled to the brim with memories of Moore from her personal wins and losses to her six decades-long career in The Dick Van Dyke Show, her eponymous hit series and beyond — and even a look at her love life.

Moore’s widow Dr. Robert Levine spoke to Deadline as part of the Deadline FYC House + HBO Max event series.

“It’s a little bit of a roller coaster emotionally,” Levine said about how he felt watching the documentary. “I think that one of the things that came out was the bridal shower video clip in the movie I had never seen before; I didn’t even know it existed. We found it in a box in the basement, very late in our process. So the first time I saw the film put together, that was the first time I saw that video. That was touching in a very, very special way because Mary was telling the story of when she was convinced that she loved tuna fish sandwiches.”

The documentary gives an inside look at a woman who was beloved by both men and women. Men picked her as their celebrity crush, and it usually was OK by with partners who wanted to be her best friend.

“I think it was just that she was safe. She was so brilliantly talented, she was also authentic and she would show her vulnerability — and she always had a smile,” Levine shared proudly. “She wasn’t threatening. As I said, she was just brilliant comedically.”

Levine added, “She was a compelling figure who was young and gorgeous and really talented, and people loved her from the first moment.”

Martin Chase says she never had a second thought about being a part of the documentary. Growing up, she watched The Mary Tyler Moore Show and was influenced by Moore’s character, Mary Richards.

“This all started with Robert Levine, Mary’s widow, who read a Vanity Fair article where Lena Waithe said that she’d love to do a movie on Mary Tyler Moore,” said Martin Chase. “They met and decided they were going to do it. Lena and I are very old friends, and she came to me because she knew that I was a student of Hollywood and that a lot of my work is about empowering women and women fostering change and that Mary had affected my life.”

She added: “I was at that age when The Mary Tyler Moore Show was on and Mary Richards was an icon for me and influenced my life decisions. I’m so thrilled to be a part of this.”

Cold Water - L'eau froide - (Olivier Assayas, 1994)

It's 1972. Touching on class, racism and other issues, the film follows Christine and Gilles, who live on the outskirts of Paris. Both are delinquents, indulging in petty crime and feeling outside society. But while Gilles has at least some care and support at home, Christine has a father whose only reaction to her confusion and pain is to lock her away in mental institutions. It's hard to tell where Christine's vicious cycle began. She's clearly unbalanced, but was that inevitable? Or has the act of imprisoning her, ignoring and drugging her pain, not only failed to treat her troubles, but actually caused them?

The Daytrippers (Greg Mottola, 1996)

The Daytrippers involves a woman (Davis) whose resolve that she is happily married is tested when she finds an excerpt from a love poem that fell from her husband's (Tucci) clothes. She elects to go to her mother (Meara) for advice and ends up going on a day trip to NYC to ask her husband about it. Along for the ride is her father, (McNamara) her sister, (Posey) and her sister's boyfriend (Schrieber). Of course, if they were able to simply confront her husband it would be easy; unfortunately he is no where to be found, so they willingly engage in amateur sleuthing to put together the story while they drive around the city looking for him.

Boca (Boca do Lixo) - 2010

Adapted from his autobiography, the film recounts the story of Hiroito, The King of Boca do Lixo (a region in downtown São Paulo of the fifties where various nightclubs, strip joints, prostitution, bars, and drugs can be found). Hiroito was a well born bohemian and at the age of 21 was accused for the murder of his father, who was violently stabbed over 40 times with a razor. Hiroito was not charged, however two months after the death of his father, Hiroito bought two guns and moved to Boca do Lixo and became one of the most dangerous criminals of the region.

This Brazilian movie (one of my favorites) is rated only 5.4 on IMDb. But this is tottally unfair. The movie is much better and deserves a rate higher than 7.

And When Did You Last See Your Father? (Anand Tucker, 2007)

The writer Blake Morrison (Colin Firth) has a non-resolved relationship with his bragger and wolf father Arthur Morrison (Jim Broadbent). However, when he is diagnosed with a terminal intestine cancer, Blake leaves his wife and children and travel to the village where he spent his childhood and adolescence to help his mother and his sister to take care of Arthur along his last days. The location brings recollections of his problematic relationship with his father.
"And When Did You Last See Your Father?" is a sensitive movie about father and son problematic relationship. Through the recollections of Blake, the viewer understand the many unresolved situations that made him indifferent (or even hating) his flawed father that loved him indeed. In the end, it dawns on him that his father is gone and he will never see him again; and he grieves and regrets the lost moments he had along his life to stay with him.
