Todd Haynes needed to get approval from Bob Dylan to use his music, since (unlike in his Velvet Goldmine (1998) where David Bowie did not give his permission for his music) he felt the film would not work without it. At the encouragement of Dylan's manager, Haynes wrote a one-page summary of his concept and the characters, which Dylan approved. It took another 6 years to get the film made due to funding difficulties.

An unnamed guy is a Dublin guitarist/singer/songwriter who makes a living by fixing vacuum cleaners in his Dad's Hoover repair shop by day, and singing and playing for money on the Dublin streets by night. An unnamed girl is a Czech who plays piano when she gets a chance, and does odd jobs by day and takes care of her Mom and her daughter by night. Guy meets girl and they get to know each other as the girl helps the guy put together a demo disc that he can take to London in hope of landing a music contract. During the same several day period, the guy and the girl work through their past loves, and reveal their budding love for one another, through their songs.

Jane Birkin Dies: Singer, Actress, Serge Gainsbourg Muse Was 76

French media has reported the death of Jane Birkin at the age of 76.

The English-French star was best known for her relationship with musician Serge Gainsbourg. The pair, who were married from 1968 to 1980, collaborated on the risque hit ‘Je T’aime… Moi Non Plus’, released in 1969 – and recorded the year before, six months after they met on the set of the film Slogan.

Although born in London, Birkin found fame singing in French – and she lived in France from the 1970s onwards. She became celebrated as a style icon throughout the late 1960s and 70s, her personal image often transcending her work on screen. The enduring Birkin handbag was inspired by her European elegance.


Her film appearances included Blow Up (1966) and big-budget Agatha Christie adaptations Death on the Nile (1978) and Evil Under the Sun (1982)

Kaya Scodelario Boards Netflix’s Ayrton Senna Series

Kaya Scodelario, fresh from wrapping Netflix’s Guy Ritchie series The Gentlemen, is sticking with the streamer for her next role.

Scodelario, who is best known for her roles in The Maze Runner and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales as well as breaking out via British teen series Skins, will star in limited series Senna.

The series will tell the story of Brazilian Formula 1 legend Ayrton Senna.

Scodelario, whose mother is from Sao Paulo, will play a fictional character in the series, which is filming in Brazil and Argentina.

The six-part series will show the three-time Formula 1 champion’s trajectory of overcoming joys and sorrows, exploring his personality and personal relationships. The starting point of the series will be the beginning of Ayrton’s racing career, when he moves to England to compete in Formula Ford, until the tragic accident in Imola, Italy, during the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994.

Senna is produced by Brazilian production company Gullane, which was founded by Caio and Fabiano Gullane with Brazilian filmmaker Vicente Amorim as showrunner. It is directed by Vicente Amorim and Julia Rezende. The series is produced in participation with Senna’s family.

“Being half-Brazilian it has always been a dream of mine to work on a Brazilian Production. It is an honor to be involved in a project that tells the story of Ayrton, a true national hero who means so much to the people of Brazil and around the world. It’s a huge responsibility and I am so excited to go on this journey,” said Scodelario.

Senna will be portrayed by Brazilian actor Gabriel Leone (Um Lugar ao Sol).
